On the Road to Leh

soft round hills of dust
sharp, rocky mountain peaks

the first prayer flags on rooves
meadows of yellow and purple

giant wild rose bushes
in full pink flower
growing from the rock

two girls in hejab
laughing in the shade of
a mani wheel

filo pastry mountains and hills
shifting and changing
constantly

khaki, metallic gold, brass,
yellow, grey, slate
iron- ore red

a stupa and a mosque
standing side by side
in Maitreya

tiny pink-cheeked children
thumbing a lift to school
in the wilderness

vast brown mountains
rising empty
from the peopled valley below

square, earth- coloured houses
wooden balconies

Tibetan faces in Islamic scarves
a giant prayer wheel turning all alone
